High Adventure at the Brandywine Art Show

Hi Reader,

At the Brandywine Show, there was a huge storm in the night.

My trustee tent stood firm through storm and gale . .

Others were not so fortunate 😢

8 tents went to the dumpster.

Other challenges:

My hopes were dashed 100 times as people approached my tent, eyes wide. "Wow" they said . . .

And went straight by me to the Adopt-a-Dog next door.

In all, one of my paintings and 29 dogs went to new homes.

With the sale of the painting and prints,

I was just $5 short of breaking even on the show.

And then I got a text that this painting had sold at Art on Bridge Gallery. So I'm in the black for the weekend. Oh joy!

Things work out, but not like you imagined!

And the shows go on!

Urban: Chestnut Hill Fall for the Arts, Sept 27, 11-5

Rural: Lititz Art Show, Oct 3, 9-5

Hometown: Phoenixville Art Walk, Oct 4, 11-4

Fly North to Freedom

During the years of the Underground Railroad in the US, slaves seeking freedom needed to communicate, but what code could they use?

They were not allowed to learn to read, but they did make quilts. Nothing suspicious about airing quilts in windows.

So quilt patterns served as codes in this life and death gamble.

If you saw this Flying Geese quilt pattern airing in a window, you knew to go north.

This painting is inspired by that quilt.

Harriet's Paintings

I'm intense and so is my art: bright colors, bold designs, clean lines that energize and add interest to any space. I layer oil paint and cold wax as thick as frosting on a cake. My many years in Africa shows up in my work: no fear, vibrant energy, rhythmic calm.

Hi Reader, I want to learn a new language, to become fluent in it. I've been dabbling in it for years, speaking with such a heavy accent I'm pretty much unintelligible. Too old to learn it? Hogwash! I've learned languages before, and know how it works. First, your desire has to be greater than the pain and frustration of being totally disoriented, sounding like a toddler, and basically making a fool of yourself. Second, you have to go to the place where it's spoken and interact with real...

Hi Reader, Have you noticed I'm trying some new things lately? I've been taking a course called Creator College, and it's got my creative juices flowing! One thing I'm learning is to share more than just my paintings. I want to share some of the happiness and hope behind them, too. And that got me thinking. What if something you see every day could lift your spirits? A color, a painting, a photograph, or even a simple image can remind us of something good when life feels overwhelming. I call...

Hi Reader, So many art shows to apply to, and each with an application fee. Should I take the risk? I've been pouring my heart and soul into my art business for six years now. No sales at the two shows last weekend. . . What are the chances of getting accepted? I took the risk and submitted two paintings. Waited and wondered. I finally got the news: I'm in! I'm in the 32% of applicants that got in! It's a little encouragement along the way. I no my change is going to come! Corduroy, 21 x 11"...
