Hi Reader, People told me that singing in the church choir was a great way to learn the language. I like to sing so I was on board! The first night I went, I could not have felt odder if I had been sitting there naked. But day-by-day, I learned little-by-little and that sustained effort allowed me to communicate in French-speaking Africa for 40 years. The pain to payoff ratio was very positive! And now I'm learning this new language--Instagramese. After a couple months in intensive language learning, I'm through the worst phase of total disorientation and know enough to have fun with it. It's a genre where relevance is measured in seconds, with a critical 3-second window to grab people's attention. It requires not only compelling texts, but also visuals and audio. And there's nothing static about it! What I master when I go to bed at night might not work in the morning. What's my motivation? I've received this treasure I need to steward: the message of my life, what matters after all the years of education, experience, mentors, research, and reflection. How can I to communicate what I've found to as many people as possible? I can lament the fact everyone is on their phones, or I can go to them where they are and learn their language. 3.5 billion people on Instagram. I have a long way to go but I know enough now to have fun, connect with people, and continue learning. And you are my special people, my inner circle. These newsletters will keep coming, top priority. Continuing the adventure! Harriet PS Click on the buttons below to see what I'm doing on Instagram or Facebook. All fun! |
I'm intense and so is my art: bright colors, bold designs, clean lines that energize and add interest to any space. I layer oil paint and cold wax as thick as frosting on a cake. My many years in Africa shows up in my work: no fear, vibrant energy, rhythmic calm.
Hi Reader, Have you noticed I'm trying some new things lately? I've been taking a course called Creator College, and it's got my creative juices flowing! One thing I'm learning is to share more than just my paintings. I want to share some of the happiness and hope behind them, too. And that got me thinking. What if something you see every day could lift your spirits? A color, a painting, a photograph, or even a simple image can remind us of something good when life feels overwhelming. I call...
Hi Reader, So many art shows to apply to, and each with an application fee. Should I take the risk? I've been pouring my heart and soul into my art business for six years now. No sales at the two shows last weekend. . . What are the chances of getting accepted? I took the risk and submitted two paintings. Waited and wondered. I finally got the news: I'm in! I'm in the 32% of applicants that got in! It's a little encouragement along the way. I no my change is going to come! Corduroy, 21 x 11"...
Hi Reader, I was invited to a Trauma Healing conference in Nairobi last October, a gathering of people from all over the world working to help people heal from the trauma of war, ethnic conflict, displacement, sexual abuse, domestic violence, kidnapping, disease, trafficking, poverty and the list goes on. I knew I'd see old friends and I wanted to bring a gift. But what? It had to be small enough to carry and I'd need about 60. My greeting cards! I prepared my heart and mind as I I wrote...
